EDF Energy Intermediate Cup Second Round
Weston-super-Mare 67 Camborne 17
Weston-super-Mare proceeded into the third round of the EDF Energy Intermediate Cup as they cruised to victory in a largely one-sided match against Camborne at the Recreation Ground.
They scored six tries in the first half and five in the second as the Cornishmen, who operate in South West 2, were brushed aside.
Apart from some disruption at set scrums, it was plain sailing for the Seasiders, who were ahead in the fourth minute.
A strong break by Takora Madamombe led to an individual try by James Reid, but after Reid's conversion, Camborne replied with a penalty by Brett Walker.
Weston had to wait another 10 minutes for their next score, but it arrived with Ashley Russell's try, following good work by Matthew McQuaid and Goran Vucicevic.
Reid added the conversion and he was soon converting Weston's third try, touched down by Vucicevic.
In the 24th minute, Paul Morrissey's clever act of dispossession gave Chris Young the chance to provide Roger Drabble with his first senior try and Morrissey was in action again, together with George Sparks, to give skipper David Burge a try to celebrate his 100th first team appearance.
Reid converted all three scores and just prior to the break, Vucicevic scored his second for a 40-3 lead.
Camborne responded early in the second half with Andrew Smith's try, converted by Walker, and Walker had the final word in stoppage time when he added the conversion to his own try.
But in between, Weston added further scores by replacement Paul Sprague, Young, whose try was also his first at senior level, Joe Ewens, McQuaid and Djordje Milenkovic.
Opposition in the next round will undoubtedly be stronger and Weston will be looking for similar performances from the ever-improving Milenkovic, Ewens and Michael Denbee who seem to be relishing his switch to blind-side flanker.Tomorrow (Sat), the Seasiders resume league action when they entertain Reading Abbey at the Rec (2.30pm).
