Trowbridge RFC

47 - 36

(HT 0-0)

Weston-super-Mare RFC
A first visit to uncharted seas (although the United did play once at Trowbridges' old ground some 45 years
ago) to find an absolutely perfect pitch, on a par with Westons' own. All credit to their groundsman.....but on to
the game.
If there had been a coach, Weston would have still been on it! The home side scored all too easily after only 3
minutes via their left wing after a simple backs move for a 7-0 start.
This was repeated three times over the next twenty minutes for a 28-0 lead, and Weston had hardly touched
the ball.
They finally woke up and scored twice in three minutes with tries by Dom Marshall and a debut score for scrum half
Rowan Bird, which was converted. 12-28 became 17-28 on the stroke of half time as the pack exerted its' increasing
superiority and trundled over for a pushover, touched down by Matthews.
The hosts opened the scoring on the restart with another 7 pointer. Weston scored a fourth on 55 minutes, a second
for Marshall...22-35, which became 22-42 following further largesse from the visitors' defence.
Normal service was resumed on the hour.  A second pushover try, touched down by Fatai Koloi, his first for the club, and
converted by Nuttycombe, was followed ten minutes later with a seven pointer touched down by Jay Davis to
incredibly reduce the arrears to a hitherto unimaginable single score of 36-42.
There was to be no fairy tale ending. Trowbridge settled their nerves with a final score to deny Weston a second bonus
point, although their place kicker finally missed a conversion.
Final result Trowbridge 47 Weston 36
A surreal match, enjoyed by a decent crowd in splendid sunshine. Trowbridge had scored seven tries and converted
six! Weston had scored six tries.
Pre match local intelligence had suggested that the home sides' strengths were in the forwards, and the backs were
not strong. Someone got this back to front!
