Weston-super-Mare RFC

74 - 22

(HT 36-5)

Swindon RFC
In front of a very reasonable crowd on a perfect afternoon for rugby Weston produced a fantastic eleven try performance to put the disappointment of their travails the previous weekend to bed.
The match got off to a great start for the hosts with fly half Archie Tilsley slotting a penalty in the second minute. They went further ahead shortly after when a double tackle by flanker Tom Burge and number eight Jay Davis led to a dislodged ball which scrum half Dan Lomax used to great effect by chipping over the top into space which fullback Hayden Main was quickest to and he gathered well to cross. Tilsley provided the conversion. Straight from the restart lock Ashley Russell provided a great take and this led to Davis sprinting away to score under the posts to provide Tilsley with the simplest of conversions.
Weston added to their score when a quick tap by Lomax led to a fine run by centre Cameron Maslen who fed right wing Sam Garrett who had tracked the centre to round off an excellent try. Tilsley again adding the extras.
Weston were on fire and following a run by Main and a resulting line out prop Rhys Matthews was on hand to touchdown from a drive over the line. Tilsley obliging again.
Davis then got his second from broken play before Swindon opened their account when their centre broke the Ito put the wing over in the right corner. This proved to be the last score of a scintillating first half.
The second period had only been going for a couple of minutes when another Lomax chip gave replacement right wing Rowan Bird the chance to gather and cross to give Weston their first points after the break. Tilsley again on target for a further two points. Swindon hit back with their second try but almost immediately a Tilsley charge down gifted young flanker Jacob Simpson with a score. Tilsley again converting. Swindon then added their third try which they converted but it was mere crumbs from a rich man's table as Matthews added his second from a catch and drive and then left wing Dominic Marshall was on hand after lovely hands by the hosts to rack up the try count.
Lomax then went blind from a scrum and was on hand to receive an inside pass from Main to score Weston's tenth try again converted by Tilsley before Swindon grabbed a bonus point by crossing for their fourth but then Matthews scored his hat trick try from a similar distance to his previous two to round off the home sides scoring.
A thoroughly entertaining afternoon of rugby union.
