Somerset Cup Quarter-final

Weston-super-Mare 27 Hornets 3

Weston-super-Mare won through to the quarter-final of the Somerset Senior Cup when they scored five tries against Hornets without reply at the Recreation Ground.

The penalty count went against the Seasiders by an incredible 14 to five, but the visitors were unable to take any significant advantage.

Their driving mauls were reasonably effective and their No 8 Wes Palmer made a few inroads during the first half, but the home defence was well up to scratch.

Weston had to wait for 22 minutes before they were awarded a penalty, but when it came, Mark Armstrong kicked to the corner before the fly-half found a huge gap from the resultant line-out to score at the posts.

Armstrong converted for the only time and, just prior to the interval, replacement centre David Steele's clean break provided a try for prop Tobias Gukibau.

Fly-half Jamie Biddle scored Hornets' only points with a penalty six minutes into the second half, but a strike against the put-in four minutes later saw No 8 George Sparks put Armstrong in for his second try.

Scrum-half Luke Hember's try in the 62nd minute took the score to 22-3 before a long move from inside their own 22 involving T J Madamombe, Harry Warman and replacement lock Andrew Ball gave Steele the easiest of touchdowns to finish things off.
