Somerset Cup - Quarter-final

Weston-super-Mare 39 pts University of Bath 19 pts

Weston-super-Mare are through to the semi-finals of the Somerset Cup, but once again, they will be disappointed to have conceded two scores in time added.

As is usual, their set scrum posed many problems for the opposition, but the line-out and loose were just about even.

However, up until those final minutes their defending was well up to scratch against a team which attacked mainly through their backs.

The Seasiders then missed three penalties to touch which almost cost them, but it was Sprague who finished off a break by full-back Harry Jones, Snook converting for 10-0.

But with the University’s set piece in trouble, skipper Andrew Glen opted for a penalty scrum which resulted in a try for wing Rich Webster, his first senior score which brought the interval scoreline to 15-7.

In the third minute of the second half, Weston used their superior scrum advantage to earn a penalty try which Snook converted and the fly-half was soon adding the extras to a pushover try credited to Ashley Russell to take the score out to 29-7.

A superb break by Chris Young produced a try for co-centre Glenn Dickson and Jones touched down for this hosts’ sixth try in the 61st minute.

A raft of replacements were made in the final 20 minutes and the students eventually took maximum advantage with tries for No 8 James Catlin and wing Scott Smith, whose score was converted by fly-half James Huxtable.
