Weston-super-Mare 10 Okehampton 41

Report by Chris Heath

In blustery conditions Weston-super-Mare started well against visitors Okehampton who started the game four places and eight points above their hosts but had only won once in four

A fine fifty twenty-two kick by young fly-half George Nuttycombe put Weston close to the visitors’ line and a successful catch and drive from the resulting line out gave flanker Callum Kingscott the opening try.

Nuttycombe added the extras with a fine conversion. Okehampton hit back and after going close a couple of times eventually took advantage of the hosts hospitality.

An excellent offload from their fly-half Dan Fogerty put outside centre Leon Horn over for their first try which was converted by full back Luke Simmons.

After a mini break by full-back Chris Young and a chip by scrum half Dan Lomax gave left wing Hayden Main a chance to pressurise Simmons who scrambled the ball into touch.

But Weston could not take advantage with their now deteriorating line out. They did however retake the lead when Weston's centres Bradley McPate and Huw Morgan combined to put Nuttycombe away.

The youngster earned a penalty which he converted to put the hosts three points up at half time.

The second half was an entirely different story with the writing on the wall when the restart was fumbled, and the visitors immediately scored a try through hooker Nathan Tomkins.

Simmons added the extras two quick fire penalties to put the Okes ten points up. Weston's heads dropped and they conceded further tries with ease through inside centre Rhys Palmer, and a brace from Horn.

Simmons converting all three to complete the scoring. Weston, who are four points adrift at the foot of the table, have proved that they can compete but only it seems for forty to fifty minutes.

This allied to a complete breakdown in their line out and the ease in which the opposition can score second half tries would lead to certain conclusions that hopefully will be taken on board for the rest of the season.

Weston travel to face Exmouth on Saturday, kick-off 2.30pm, with the Devon side now sixth in the Regional 1 South West table after their 33-17 defeat away to Devonport Services.
