South West One
Reading Abbey 27 pts WESTON 45 pts
WESTON received a severe jolt at Rosehill before running out comfortable winners against already relegated Reading Abbey.
The fact was that the hosts were in the lead after an hour, the advantage having changed hands seven times before the crucial intervention of Takura Madamombe's third try.
The 29-year-old former Zimbabwe international centre had already kept his team in the match with powerful tries in the fifth and 49th minutes and this third effort, another strong burst from a five-metre scrum, virtually killed off any hopes that Abbey may have had of an unlikely victory.
Shortly afterwards, Mark Armstrong and Paul Sprague added tries to give the Seasiders the necessary daylight between the two sides, with Armstrong adding his fifth conversion.
But earlier, it had been a different story. Abbey were looking far from a relegated team and Tom Waterhouse struck in the second minute with a 30 metre penalty.
Madamombe replied with his first score but Weston's defence was at fault when Ben Finnie restored the hosts' lead.
A forward drive and a break by Matthew McQuaid produced a try for Michael Denbee which Armstrong again converted but more appalling defending gifted a soft try to Abbey's Steve Willis.
Waterhouse converted for an interval score of 15-14 but Madamombe restored Weston's advantage with his second try.
Armstrong added the goal points but Weston messed up Abbey's re-start and Waterhouse was soon converting his own try to give his team the lead for the fourth time.
It was at this point when Madamombe stepped up again when he took replacement Luke Hember's short pass and Armstrong's conversion took the score to 22-28.
A strong drive by Sean Bennett set up Armstrong's try, then Sprague's delightful effort from 30 metres put the result beyond doubt.
Weston just had time to concede Abbey's fourth try from another uncleared re-start but they had the final word when David Taylor's break supported by McQuaid produced a try for Hember in the sixth minute of time added.
This was Weston's final match of the season in South West 1 which sees them in fourth place. It was a satisfactory end in a match in which Denbee and Andrew Richards made telling contributions.
