Mounts Bay
Weston-super-Mare RFC

South West One

Mounts Bay 37 Weston-super-Mare 10

Mounts Bay, newly promoted from South West 2, showed why they may be heading for the National Leagues.

In a largely one-sided affair at Mennaye Field, they were always in command, scoring four tries to one and adding 17 points from the boot of their former Wales fly-half Lee Jarvis.

Weston's main problem was their line-out. Starting from the opening minute, they lost six in all, giving their hosts an important advantage.

The Bay were two scores to the good by the 15th minute, Steve Evans touching down first, followed by Thom Berry.

Jarvis converted both before Ashley Russell, George Sparks and Roger Drabble received extensive treatment for injuries, Drabble eventually retiring in the 46th minute.

Two further Jarvis penalties took the score to 20-0 before Mark Armstrong's 40-metre penalty reduced the arrears as Weston started to respond.

But crucial errors either side of the break put the result beyond doubt.Following Armstrong's score, the re-start was knocked on for Jarvis to kick his third penalty.

Then, four minutes into the second half, an attempted clearance kick was run back, leading to Evans' second try which Jarvis converted.

In the 63rd minute, Jarvis added the points to a try by Ben Hilton before Weston made a belated comeback.

A powerful run out of defence by Alec Higgins was well supported by Armstrong and Mike Lowis to give James Curgenven the chance to chip and chase for the try.

Armstrong converted, and in the final moments, Curgenven's run from broken play saw Sean Bennett stopped at the right corner.
